Getting to know the work of Dr. Tae Yun Kim
Dr. Tae Yun Kim teaches lessons in the martial arts, but her lessons often move past the physical realm of the sport. She's trying to teach her students more about how to think and how to live, and often, that means she reaches for metaphors. For example, some students have difficulty understanding basic concepts such as envy, pride and fear. Grandmaster Dr. Tae Yun Kim has been known to take these students on walks, and she'll use the rocks, insects, flowers and buildings she sees to augment the words she's saying. It's not uncommon for her to use metaphors that her students don't fully understand until days or even weeks have passed. For example, she might point to a specific plant and then quote a Bible verse by number only. When that student returns home and looks up the verse, the meaning becomes clear. And the extra effort involved in learning that lesson makes it a lesson that's harder to forget.
